Recently I had a chance to take a peek of Champions Online which is a new superhero type of game a lot like City of Hero’s. You can develop your character down to the shape of their face and choose what powers your character uses.
Keep in mind, this game is still in Beta so it is a little rough around the edges. Even so, I did have fun.
Now, if you have never played City of Hero’s then you have nothing to reference this experience to. But, for those of you who have played City of Hero’s then you are familiar with their character development, leveling, etc.
To me, it’s very similar, almost too similar, but how many times can you rehash a superhero game? The graphics in the beta did not look good. Now, that may be the computer or because we recently reloaded the main game testing PC. However, we tested FUEL and saw great graphics so I’m leaning towards it being their format. Will it improve. Probably. Remember this is a beta so give it the benefit of the doubt.
Anyway, back to the game. After a few hours of play it started sinking in why I quit playing City of Hero’s. I got tired of the same thing over and over again. It’s kill bad dudes, do a mission, level up. Same bad guys, same missions, same look, feel, etc. Hopefully they will change it up a little more than CoH but who knows.
Overall I found it fun but I wouldn’t pay monthly for it. From what I saw there is just not enough to keep my interest at the moment. However, let me say it again, this is a beta which means this is just a “testing” phase and that means not all of the bugs are worked out, yet. When this does go live I will take a look and I might be very surprised. Then again, I might get exactly what I did in the beta, a few hours of fun followed by the same feeling of repetition and boredom afterward.
